Great Northern Railway | April 2024
In the early 1900s, traveling as a hobo through Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota offered a rugged yet adventurous journey. Hobos hitched rides on freight trains, hopping from town to town in search of work and opportunity. In Minnesota, bustling cities like Minneapolis provided temporary shelter and potential job prospects, while the state's rural areas offered peaceful landscapes to rest. South Dakota's vast prairies and rugged Black Hills presented challenges and rewards for hobos, who sought refuge in makeshift camps along the railway lines. North Dakota's expansive plains tested the endurance of hobos, but also offered the chance to experience the camaraderie of fellow travelers and the hospitality of small towns along the way.
