Ride The Rails - Monthly FeaturesThe Rambler - Daily Menu

Embark on a transcontinental journey alongside Leon Ray Livingston as he traverses the vast expanse of the United States. Indulge in our monthly unveiling of a meticulously curated menu.

Rock Island Railway | May 2025

Traveling as a hobo through Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas in the 1900s meant embarking on a rugged journey across the heartland of America. Hobos rode freight trains, hopping from one state to the next in search of work and adventure. In Iowa, lush farmlands stretched as far as the eye could see, offering opportunities for seasonal labor and temporary shelter in barns or empty boxcars. Nebraska's vast prairies and rolling hills provided a challenging yet rewarding landscape for hobos, who relied on the generosity of farmers and small-town communities along the way. Missouri's bustling cities, like St. Louis, offered a stark contrast to the rural tranquility of the countryside, with opportunities for odd jobs and encounters with fellow travelers. Kansas, with its sweeping plains and wide-open spaces, presented both the freedom of the open road and the harsh realities of life on the fringes of society. For hobos in the 1900s, the journey through these states was a test of endurance and resilience, but also a chance to experience the true spirit of America's heartland. Come and join Leon Livingston during the month of May and explore culinary delights throughout the “Breadbasket of the USA.”
